About North-by-South

North-by-South is a unique, open source internet development firm. We specialize in building and maintaining massively scalable, consumer-facing Web 2.0 projects but we also do cross-platform desktop applications engineering, system/network administration and Unix server applications.

We have a core group of project, business and technology managers in San Francisco with a second hub in São Paulo, Brazil, where many of our engineers live. We've organized a large Developers Network of designers, XHTML/CSS developers, PHP/Ruby/Python/etc programmers, project managers, sysadmins, database specialists and Javascript/AJAX coders from all over Latin America.

When we come into contact with a project, we custom-build a team of top talent from our network of open source programmers in Latin America. Our teams include a project manager and/or a technology manager who work in San Francisco and are available locally to the project owners for face-to-face planning. From there, we construct a team that is exactly suited to the needs of the project. Because we only activate developers when needed, we don't carry significant overhead and these cost savings are passed on to our clients.

Our Developers Network links together people who actively participate in the open source phenomenon in Latin America. In 2006, Brazil became one of the first countries in Latin America to mandate, by law, a complete shift to free & open source software for all government systems. Open source software has swept across the continent and our developers exhibit all the best qualities of the typical open source programmer: passion for code, meticulous attention to detail and pride in developing clean, efficient codebases.

Our developers also have a much lower cost-of-living than people in California and this is another way we reduce the cost of software development for our clients. Our evolution as a company has made it so that geographically-distributed development isn't a risk to be mitigated; instead, near-shoring is our main competitive advantage.
